Do You Really Need a Cooling Truck to Transport Fresh Food?
When people talk about moving fresh food, the default answer is a cooling truck: a vehicle with a refrigeration unit bolted on, holding the load cold from origin to destination. It is the textbook solution, and for a large distributor running full loads over long distances every day, it is the right one.
For almost everyone else it is out of reach. A refrigerated truck means buying or leasing the vehicle, fitting and maintaining the refrigeration unit, and burning fuel to run it on every trip whether the truck is full or nearly empty. The question worth asking is not how to afford a cooling truck. It is whether the load actually needs one.
What a cooling truck actually gives you
A refrigerated truck provides continuously generated cold across a large volume for an unlimited duration, as long as it has fuel. Those are three separate benefits, and most small and medium loads only need one of them.
- Unlimited duration. Essential for multi day, cross border haulage. Irrelevant for a two hour run to market.
- Large volume. Essential for full pallet loads. Irrelevant for a few hundred kilos.
- Active cooling. It can pull down a warm load. But a well handled load should already be pre-cooled before it is ever loaded.
If your journeys are measured in hours rather than days, and your loads fit in a van or a pickup, you are paying for capability you do not use.
The real costs of running one
- Capital or lease cost for the vehicle and the refrigeration unit.
- Fuel to run the unit on every trip, on top of fuel to move the truck.
- Specialist maintenance, because a failed compressor on the road means the whole load is at risk.
- Poor utilisation, since the fixed cost is the same whether the truck runs full or half empty.
- Route inflexibility. One truck cannot serve five vendors going to five different markets at the same time.
That last one is the quiet killer for anyone serving scattered small customers. A single cooling truck forces everything through one schedule and one route.
The alternative: move the cold, not the cooling unit

When you genuinely do need a cooling truck
Be honest about the cases where nothing else will do: full pallet loads moving between cities, multi day or cross border haulage, frozen product that must stay below minus 18°C for the entire journey, and formal supply contracts that require certified reefer transport. If that describes your business, a cooling truck is the correct tool.
If it does not, the truck is a fixed cost solving a problem your load does not have.
