Post-Harvest Spoilage in Rwanda: Why It Happens and How to Stop It
Post-harvest spoilage is one of the largest and least visible costs in Rwandan agriculture. Produce that rots between the field and the customer never shows up as a bill, but it is money gone all the same. In many parts of the region, close to 40% of a smallholder's harvest can be lost before it ever sells. Here is why it happens in Rwanda specifically, and what actually stops it.
Why so much produce spoils in Rwanda
The causes are consistent, and every one of them comes back to heat and time:
- No cold storage between field and market. Most smallholders and vendors have no fridge or cold room, so produce sits warm from harvest until it sells.
- Unreliable or absent electricity. Even where a cold room exists, an outage can spoil everything inside, so cold that depends on the grid is a real risk.
- Long, warm journeys to market. Produce bounces in a warm vehicle for hours between districts, ageing the whole way.
- Harvesting in the heat of the day. Crops picked in the midday sun carry field heat that speeds ripening and rot.
- Gluts at peak season. When everyone harvests at once, prices fall and produce that cannot be stored is dumped cheap or thrown away.
What post-harvest spoilage really costs
The loss is bigger than the rotten produce itself. When a harvest spoils, a Rwandan farmer or vendor also loses the seed, water, labour, and transport already spent on it. They are forced to discount good produce in a rush before it turns, dragging down prices. And they lose customers who go elsewhere when the produce does not look fresh. The single change that cuts spoilage most
Most of the causes above share one root: produce spending too long warm. Close that gap, and spoilage falls sharply. The step that closes it is holding produce in a steady cold band from the moment it is harvested, through storage, transport, and the market day, until it sells.
